As well as a shortlived foray into blogging with LiveJournal, I have more recently been having fun with
– a form of blogging combined with a website recommendation facility.
After using it for a few months I think it seems to have great potential for creating communities on the web. It integrates well in both Mozilla and IE, allowing one-click recommendation of sites and the comments can be blogged following another couple of clicks.
The idea is that by registering your interests you can find random pages recommended by people who share these, you can then list as friends anyone that constantly has provided useful site recommendations and keep a blog of the places that you have enjoyed to share with other ’stumblers’.
In the past decade, the web has gone from an academic oddity to mainstream media – there is so much potential for it to not only link communities but forge new partnerships. It might not be in the vision for the future that Microsoft and media empires have as a priority – but there is still an opportunity for the web to be more than a passive experience.
