Those smart people at Google have used clever marketing psychology, making access to Gmail invite only. A free service, providing one of the best web-app mail interfaces and a gig of storage – it gains desirability because of its artificial scarcity.
Those clever mozilla folks have harnessed this for their new firefox browser. Providing invites for free for anyone that displays a button on their site, ranging from this:

I’ve already got a gmail account – and it seems that a lot of folks do but it might add interest in the two projects… (UPDATE: I have invites that I’d be happy to send from my account).
